Archaeology

Malta's history dates back 7,000 years, the first inhabitants of the island settling in Neolithic times and leaving a number of Megalithic Temples dedicated to the goddess of fertility. Seven megalithic temples are found on the islands of Malta and Gozo, each the result of an individual development. Several of these are unique architectural masterpieces, particularly the Hal-Saflieni Hypogeum, which is the oldest example of prehistoric rock cut tombs in Europe, and a world-class UNESCO archaeological site, unique in the world.
